Dual Tuner TiVos - Standard Definition

TCD649080 Units: This is the latest TiVo model made by TiVo specifically for standard definition programming. It can record two shows at once (as long as one is on analog or basic cable). This unit can control a cable box or a DirecTV or DISH receiver for watching/recording encrypted programming. On-board ethernet allows for easy network connections and phone option is included if ethernet is not available. Also included is a USB port that allows for connection of the TiVo wireless G adapter (sold separately) so that the unit can be connected to a wireless network (open, or with WEP or WPA encryption). We highly recommend using a network connection for this unit; many advanced features are only available with the network connection.

Included in the package: Black, peanut-shaped remote, manuals, power cord, a/v composite cable, a/v coax cable and splitter, phone cord, phone splitter, ir blaster cable.

Recommendations: This TiVo DVR is most suitable for use in a cable TV/standard definition TV environment. It also works perfectly for DirecTV and DISH environments, but unless the household also has cable TV (analog) it will not be able to record two programs at once. But, like all TiVo DVRs, you can still watch one pre-recorded program while recording live TV.

Capacity: The stock unit comes from TiVo's production facility with an 80 GB drive installed. The translates to about 80 hours at "Basic" quality (i.e. not great - suitable for the evening news maybe) or about 22 hours at "Best" quality (necessary for larger TVs and for action-oriented recordings). We are offering units with significantly larger drives for storage of recording generally for a primary TV in a house. Two upgraded units are now available from Hinsdale TiVo Upgrades. The first unit contains a 400 GB PATA/IDE hard drive and provides from 445 hours (Basic Quality) to 125 hours (Best Quality). The largest unit contains a 750 GB PATA/IDE hard drive and holds from 850 hours at Basic Quality to 240 hours at Best Quality.

Warranty: Six months, parts and labor, on the upgraded units. The stock TiVo unit gets TiVo's three month parts and labor warranty.

DVD TiVo Combination Units - Standard Definition - Humax DRT400

TCD595 Units: Humax manufactures this standard definition TiVo DVR that also contains a DVD player/burner. This unit can control a cable box or a DirecTV or DISH receiver for watching/recording encrypted programming. A USB port on-board allows for connection of the TiVo wireless G adapter (sold separately) so that the unit can be connected to a wireless network (open, or with WEP or WPA encryption) or a USB-ethernet adapter (sold separately) that allows for connection to a wired ethernet network. We highly recommend using a network connection for this unit; many advanced features are only available with the network connection.

CD and DVD Information: The internal DVD player/burner on this unit allows several features. The DVD player can play all Region 1 DVDs (commercial and self-burned) and can burn DVDs from both programming on the TiVo hard drive (with very nice TiVo-style menus) OR from an external source such as a video camera. The CD player will play all standard audio CDs.

Recommendations: This Humax TiVo DVR is suitable for use in any situation with a standard definition TV, where the goal is to either reduce the amount of components needed (since this replaces your CD/DVD player) or there is a desire to archive either TV programming or programming/video from an external source. Like all TiVo DVRs, you can watch one pre-recorded program while recording live TV.

The translates to about 40 hours at "Basic EP" quality (i.e. not great - suitable for the evening news maybe) or about 10 hours at "Extreme (Fine)" quality (necessary for larger TVs and for action-oriented recordings, or anything that will be off-loaded to DVDs to preserve quality). We are offering units with significantly larger drives for storage of recording generally for a primary TV in a house. Two upgraded units are now available from Hinsdale TiVo Upgrades. The first unit contains a 400 GB PATA/IDE hard drive and provides from 490 hours (Basic Quality) to 110 hours (Extreme Quality). The largest unit contains a 750 GB PATA/IDE hard drive and holds from 900 hours at Basic Quality to 200 hours at Extreme Quality.

Series3 HD TiVo Units - High Definition - TiVo TCD648250B

TCD648250B Units: This is the latest and greatest TiVo model. It's the first non-DirecTV unit to record and display HD, and it also contains two CableCARD slots which means that, with two CableCARDs from your cable company, you can record two channels at once of encrypted (or not) HD (or SD) content. For the first time, this means that cable customers don't need (and, with this unit, can't use) a cable box to watch and record premium content.

This unit will not work with DirecTV or DISH.

The translates to about 30 hours of High Definition digital recording capacity or about 300 hours of Standard Definition programming (analog or digital). We are offering units with significantly larger drives for storage of recording generally for a primary TV in a house. Two upgraded units are now available from Hinsdale TiVo Upgrades. The first upgraded unit contains a 500 GB SATA hard drive specifically chosen and tuned to run extremely quietly and record either 65 HD hours or 600 SD hours. The largest unit we offer contains a 750 GB SATA drive, also chosen and tuned for it's quiet characteristics. This model has a capacity of 100 HD hours or 950 SD hours. All three models use storage capacity from the same bank for both HD and SD, so if the drive is full halfway with HD storage, only half capacity for either recording mode remains.
